The Spectacle is the Theater of the Sublime
It’s hard to pinpoint where Bono gets his influences from. One can definitely hear moments of various genres including Trap (electronic), Industrial, and Black Metal in "The Spectacle is the Theater of the Sublime”. However, for a prolific composer who is known for his orchestral music, choral music, and arty-progressive post rock, it’s no surprise to hear him experimenting with new, fringe genres and writing. For anyone interested in hearing a young composer using new production techniques and exploring new sound worlds, both light and dark, “Spectacle” does not disappoint.
GHOST AGAINST GHOST: Resume
Resume is the third release from the upcoming still love LP. This epic 9-minute gothic shoegaze track moves from vast sci-fi fields of Vangelis-like distorted synth textures, to downtempo verses driven by Pridgen's heavy grooves and Bono's contemplative lyrics. The vocal passage peaks in a dense choir of interweaving female and male vocals that transitions into a massive, slow and heavy sound wall over a Black Sabbath inspired groove. This somehow delivers the listener into an uptempo, psycho-circus disco-electronica section that strangely blends mid-70's Pink Floyd dance grooves with beautifully wild, classical sounding lines to create a sort of vintage sonic futurism.
GHOST AGAINST GHOST: Checkpoint Charlie (N0guchi/Bono remix)
Checkpoint Charlie is a dramatic, dreamy experiment in lush, dark, romantic harmonies and grating, headsplitting noise. Composed and produced by Ghost Against Ghost frontman Christopher Bono, the epic work features the Czech FILMharmonic string orchestra alongside Bono's ethereal and strange vocals, and moments of thunderous drumming by Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta, Trash Talk, Suicidal Tendencies).
GHOST AGAINST GHOST: UNARM EP
Unarm is the second thunderous opus in the band's dark-romantic conceptual series of releases. It focuses on the transformation of dark/negative energy into a positive/life-giving energy by referencing and reflecting on the Tibetan Buddhist practice of Tonglen, in which the practitioner envisions taking on a thick black cloud of smoke consisting of the pain and suffering of a concentrated other, and exhaling a stream of golden light that saturates the body and mind of the recipient with peace, wisdom and resolution.
With the Unarm EP, Ghost Against Ghost continues to showcase their unique combination of monolithic, dynamic post-rock, but here expanding further into melodic experimentalism along the lines of Peter Gabriel's and Brian Eno's early solo work, building to heavy climaxes reminiscent of Spiritualized and Muse.
GHOST AGAINST GHOST: STILL LOVE EP
The release beautifully combines the expansive and engaging compositions of frontman Christopher Bono with the thunderous drumming of Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta, Trash Talk) and the atmospheric guitars of Anthony Molina (Mercury Rev). Bono draws from his neoclassical background as a composer and producer to create the enveloping soundscape that is Ghost Against Ghost. The still love EP weaves themes of love, heartbreak, and betrayal into a powerful combination of monolithic, synth driven post-rock in the vein of Disintegration era The Cure, with dramatic climaxes a la Vangelis with just a touch of contemporary David Sylvian'S ambiance.
Christopher bono: BARDO
BARDO is an incredibly cinematic, contemporary classical epic that is a great fit for many dynamic and emotional film cues. It ranges from soaring beauty, to raging aggression, and almost everything in between over the course of one hour of music.
